AI chatbots

What is an AI chatbot for websites, and how is it different from old chat widgets?

A plain-language explanation of how AI website chatbots work, how they differ from rule-based chat widgets, and what a business needs to launch one.

An AI chatbot for websites is an assistant that sits in a chat window on your site and answers visitors’ questions in natural language, using information about your business. Unlike the scripted chat widgets of a few years ago, it does not need you to predict every question and write a decision tree. It reads your content and responds to what people actually type.

Rule-based widgets versus AI assistants

Traditional chat widgets work like phone menus. You design buttons and paths: “Shipping”, “Returns”, “Talk to sales”. If a visitor asks something you did not plan for, the bot shrugs and offers the same three buttons again. Maintaining these flows takes time, and they break whenever your business changes.

An AI assistant works differently. You give it knowledge sources, such as website pages, documents, pasted text and FAQs. When a visitor asks a question, the assistant finds the relevant parts of that knowledge and writes an answer in plain language. The same assistant can handle “do you ship to Dubai?”, “how long does delivery take to Lahore?” and “what if my parcel arrives damaged?” without three separate scripts.

What “trained on your content” actually means

Most business chatbots do not retrain a language model from scratch. Instead they combine a general language model with a searchable copy of your knowledge. This approach is often called retrieval-augmented generation. In practice it means two things for you: answers are grounded in your own information, and updating the bot is as easy as updating a page or re-uploading a document.

A good rule: if a new employee could answer the question by reading your website and internal FAQ, an AI assistant trained on the same material can usually answer it too.

What a website AI chatbot is good at

  • Answering repeat questions about prices, opening hours, delivery, policies and services.
  • Guiding visitors to the right page, product or service.
  • Collecting contact details from people who want a quote, a callback or a booking.
  • Working nights, weekends and holidays without extra staff.
  • Showing you what customers ask, through conversation history.

Where it needs boundaries

AI assistants should be told what not to do. A clinic may not want its bot to interpret symptoms. A law firm may want it to explain services but not give legal advice. Good chatbot builders let you set the assistant’s tone and limits and decide what happens when a question falls outside its knowledge, such as asking for contact details so a person can follow up.

What you need to launch one

  1. Clear source content: service pages, a pricing page, policies and a list of common questions.
  2. A chatbot builder that accepts those sources without code, such as Prime Chat.
  3. A few minutes to brand the widget so it looks like part of your site.
  4. One script tag pasted into your website.

Prime Chat by PrimeWebKit is built around exactly this flow. You create an assistant, add your knowledge, set its behavior and branding, and install it with a single script. From the dashboard you can read conversations, update knowledge and see the leads it captured.
