Using an AI chatbot for lead generation: what to ask, when, and why

How to capture names, emails and phone numbers through a website chatbot without annoying visitors, with example prompts by industry.

Most website visitors leave without filling in a form. A chatbot changes the moment of capture: instead of asking for details up front, it asks after it has been useful. That timing is the difference between a lead and a bounce.

Help first, ask second

A visitor who just got a clear answer about delivery times or treatment prices is far more willing to share an email than one greeted by a form. Configure your assistant to answer the question first, then offer a reason to stay in touch: a quote, a callback, a booking or a copy of the details by email.

Ask only for what you will use

  • Email only, when you will send information or a quote.
  • Name and phone, when your team will call back.
  • One qualifying detail, such as budget, area or preferred date, when it changes who should follow up.

Example capture moments

  • E-commerce: “I can let you know when that size is back in stock. What email should I use?”
  • Real estate: “Would you like an agent to send similar listings in that area? What’s the best number to reach you?”
  • Clinics: “I can ask the front desk to call you about whitening options. May I have your name and number?”
  • Agencies: “I can have someone prepare a rough estimate. What’s your email and roughly when do you want to start?”

Follow up fast

Leads go cold within hours. Check captured contacts daily, and reply with the specific thing the visitor asked about. The chat transcript tells you exactly what that was, so your first message can pick up where the conversation stopped.

Prime Chat captures names, email addresses and phone numbers inside the conversation and shows them in your dashboard alongside the full chat, so the person following up has context.
