Migrating to Shopify: A Step-by-Step Guide (Without Losing SEO)

Prime WebkitDecember 17, 20253 min read

Migrating an online store to Shopify can feel risky. You've built up products, customers, order history, and — crucially — search rankings, and the fear of losing any of it holds many businesses back. But with a careful, planned migration, you preserve what matters and often come out stronger. Here's how to do it right.

Why businesses migrate to Shopify

Common reasons include escaping a platform that's slow, hard to maintain, or expensive to run; wanting Shopify's simplicity and reliability; or needing better tools and integrations. Whatever the reason, a migration is also a chance to fix accumulated problems and relaunch a cleaner, faster store.

Step 1: Plan and audit

Before touching anything, take stock. Document your current products, collections, customer data, and — importantly — all your existing URLs. Note which pages get traffic and rank well. This inventory is the map that keeps your migration from losing anything valuable.

Step 2: Set up your Shopify store

Create your Shopify store and choose or build a theme. This is the moment to improve on your old design rather than just copying it — a faster, more conversion-focused storefront is one of the biggest benefits of migrating. (See our tips on increasing conversion rate.)

Step 3: Migrate your data

Move your products, collections, customers, and order history to Shopify. This can be done with migration apps or manually for smaller catalogs. The key is accuracy: check that products, variants, images, and inventory all transfer correctly, and verify a sample thoroughly before going live.

Step 4: Protect your SEO with redirects

This is the step that makes or breaks a migration. Your old URLs will change, and if you don't handle that, you'll lose the rankings and traffic you've built.

What to do: Map every important old URL to its new Shopify equivalent and set up 301 redirects. This tells search engines (and visitors) where content has moved, preserving your rankings and link equity. Skipping this is the single most common — and costly — migration mistake.

Step 5: Recreate your SEO essentials

Beyond redirects, make sure your SEO fundamentals carry over: page titles, meta descriptions, image alt text, and structured data. Don't let a migration quietly strip out the technical SEO that helps you rank.

Step 6: Test everything before launch

Before going live, test thoroughly: place test orders, check every payment and shipping option, verify emails, and click through the whole store on desktop and mobile. Catching problems now is far better than discovering them from frustrated customers later.

Step 7: Launch and monitor

Once live, keep a close eye on things. Monitor your search rankings and traffic in Google Search Console, watch for any 404 errors (which signal missed redirects), and be ready to fix issues quickly. It's normal to see minor fluctuations after a migration; a well-executed one recovers and typically improves within weeks.

Common migration mistakes to avoid

  • No redirect plan — the fastest way to tank your traffic.
  • Rushing the data transfer — errors in products or inventory create real problems.
  • Forgetting SEO details — losing titles, metadata, and alt text costs rankings.
  • Skipping testing — launching with broken checkout or shipping loses sales immediately.

The bottom line

Migrating to Shopify doesn't have to be scary. With a careful plan — auditing your current store, transferring data accurately, setting up redirects to protect SEO, and testing thoroughly — you preserve your products, customers, and rankings while gaining a faster, more reliable store. The key is doing it deliberately, not hastily.
