Use percentage change when a value moves from an original amount to a new amount:

Percentage change = ((new value − original value) ÷ original value) × 100

The sign tells you the direction. A positive result is an increase; a negative result is a decrease.

If monthly visitors rise from 8,000 to 9,200:

((9,200 − 8,000) ÷ 8,000) × 100 = (1,200 ÷ 8,000) × 100 = 15%

Traffic increased by 15%.

If a price falls from $120 to $90:

((90 − 120) ÷ 120) × 100 = (-30 ÷ 120) × 100 = -25%

The negative sign means a decrease, so the price decreased by 25%.

The most important detail is the denominator: percentage change is based on the original value. A move from 100 to 150 is a 50% increase. Moving back from 150 to 100 is a 33.33% decrease, because the second change starts at 150.

Percentage difference formula

Percentage difference is useful when neither value is the obvious starting point. It compares two values using their average as the reference:

Percentage difference = (absolute difference ÷ average of the two values) × 100

The absolute difference is the positive distance between the values. The average is:

Average = (value 1 + value 2) ÷ 2

For measurements of 48 and 52:

absolute difference = 52 − 48 = 4

average = (48 + 52) ÷ 2 = 50

percentage difference = (4 ÷ 50) × 100 = 8%

The percentage difference is 8%. Do not use this formula when you clearly have a before value and an after value; use percentage increase or decrease in that situation.

Discount, tax, and final price formulas

For a discount, first calculate the percentage amount, then subtract it:

Discounted price = original price × (1 − percentage ÷ 100)

A $75 item with a 20% discount costs:

75 × (1 − 20 ÷ 100) = 75 × 0.80 = $60

For tax or a markup, add the percentage instead:

Final price = original price × (1 + percentage ÷ 100)

A $240 invoice with 8% tax becomes:

240 × (1 + 8 ÷ 100) = 240 × 1.08 = $259.20

  • Using the wrong base: percentage change uses the original value; percentage difference uses the average of both values.
